Programme Description
International students across all subjects (excluding the medical fields) enrolled in a German higher education institute’s doctoral programme are eligible for the scholarship. Eligible individuals are from post-Soviet countries, countries in the EU’s eastern and south-eastern regions, and the Global South (Asia, Africa, Latin America). Inclusion criteria consist of a sound academic background as well as extra-curricular voluntary social and political engagement. PhD students are provided with material and non-material assistance. Supported students should be able to focus on studying without financial concerns and have more time for their volunteering.
Target Group
Anyone who has been unconditionally accepted for a doctorate at a German higher education institution is welcome to apply – with the exception of the medical fields. Suitable applicants are from Global South countries (Asia, Africa, Latin America), post-Soviet countries as well as eastern and south-eastern European (EU) nations. PhD students from OECD nations are not eligible for funding.
Academic Requirements
Admittance to a doctoral programme at a state or state-recognised higher education institution in Germany adequate knowledge of German, though the classes are conducted in English. This is to mean a “Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang” of level 2 at least, a “Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache” of level 4 at least, a “Zertifikat C 1” from a Goethe Institute, the “Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz” level II or a “Telc C1 Hochschule”
Number of Scholarships
Approximately 15 scholarships annually.
Duration
Duration of the funding is typically 3.5 years. In the most exceptional instances, funding might be provided longer than this but never beyond the final examination date.
